- Asphalt shingle
- A roofing shingle made of a fiberglass mat coated with asphalt and topped with ceramic-coated mineral granules. Asphalt shingles are the most common residential roofing material in the United States — they're cost-effective, fire-resistant, and last 20–50 years depending on grade.
- Class A fire rating
- The highest fire-resistance rating for roofing materials under ASTM E108 / UL 790 testing. A Class A roof can withstand severe exposure to fire from outside the building. CertainTeed asphalt shingles and DaVinci synthetic roofs are Class A.
- Class 4 impact resistance
- The highest impact-resistance rating under UL 2218, indicating a shingle has withstood a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking. NorthGate ClimateFlex and DaVinci synthetic shake both carry Class 4. Class 4 roofs often qualify for homeowners-insurance discounts.
- CertainTeed Integrity Roof System®
- The complete CertainTeed roofing system — including Swift Start® starter shingles, WinterGuard® ice-and-water shield, Roofers' Select® or DiamondDeck® underlayment, the main shingle, and Shadow Ridge® hip-and-ridge caps. A full Integrity Roof System install is what unlocks the unlimited-wind warranty.
- CertainTeed 5-Star Select Shingle Master
- CertainTeed's highest installer credential. Only Shingle Master Premier Credentialed contractors are authorized to issue the SureStart™ Plus extended warranty. HyTech holds this designation.
- Cedar shake
- A roof shingle hand-split from red, white, or Alaskan yellow cedar. Cedar shake gives a traditional Cape Cod weathered look and lasts 20–25 years with maintenance. We install cedar with stainless steel fasteners and woven hip-and-ridge caps.
- DaVinci Roofscapes
- A US-manufactured synthetic shingle line that molds engineered polymer to mimic real cedar shake or natural slate. DaVinci shingles carry a lifetime warranty, Class A fire, Class 4 impact, and wind ratings to 110/180 mph. HyTech is the top certified DaVinci installer in Massachusetts.
- Drip edge
- A metal flashing installed along the eaves and rakes of a roof that directs water away from the fascia and into the gutters. Drip edge is required by current building code on every new roof we install.
- EPDM
- Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer — a synthetic rubber membrane used for flat roofs. EPDM is durable, flexible, and typically lasts 25-30 years. Installed in large sheets with adhesive or ballast.
- Fascia
- The horizontal trim board that runs along the lower edge of the roof, usually behind the gutters. Fascia takes the impact of weather and supports the gutter system; we install AZEK PVC or cedar fascia.
- GACO silicone roof coating
- A 100% silicone liquid-applied roof restoration system. GACO is applied over an existing flat or low-slope roof and cures into a seamless waterproof membrane warrantied for 50 years. Cannot be broken down by UV rays or ponding water. HyTech was the first roofing company on Cape Cod certified to install GACO.
- Hip and ridge cap
- Specialty shingles installed at the peaks (ridges) and angles (hips) where two roof planes meet. CertainTeed's Shadow Ridge® cap is part of the Integrity Roof System and is required to unlock the unlimited-wind warranty.
- HIC license
- Home Improvement Contractor registration with the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. Required to perform residential roofing work in Massachusetts. HyTech is fully HIC licensed.
- Hurricane nail line
- The reinforced double-thick zone on a CertainTeed shingle — the only location where shingle thickness is doubled. Nailing into the Hurricane nail line (rather than the standard "wide nail line") provides maximum holding power. HyTech crews are trained to nail exclusively in this line.
- Ice and water shield
- A self-adhering rubberized membrane (such as CertainTeed WinterGuard® or Grace Vycor®) installed along eaves, valleys, and around penetrations to prevent water infiltration from ice dams. Required by Massachusetts code in cold-climate zones.
- Landmark / Landmark PRO / NorthGate ClimateFlex
- CertainTeed's three lifetime asphalt shingles. Landmark is the standard tier. Landmark PRO adds Max Def color and 30-year algae warranty. NorthGate ClimateFlex is the top tier — SBS rubberized asphalt with Class 4 impact resistance. See our shingle comparison page for full specs.
- Low-slope / flat roof
- A roof with a slope of less than 2:12 (2 inches of rise per 12 inches of run). Flat roofs require membrane systems (EPDM, TPO, SPF) or coatings — standard asphalt shingles cannot be used.
- OSHA certification
- Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration fall-protection standards required for commercial roofing work. HyTech is fully OSHA certified.
- Pitch
- The steepness of a roof, expressed as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run (e.g., 6:12 means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance). Most Cape Cod homes are between 4:12 and 9:12. Steeper pitches add 15–35% to installation labor.
- Ridge vent
- An exhaust vent installed along the peak of a roof that lets hot, humid attic air escape while the soffit vents pull cool intake air in from the eaves. We install CertainTeed Filter Ridge Vent® (formerly Shingle Vent II) — the only ridge vent with an external baffle for true Bernoulli exhaust.
- Roof square
- A unit of roofing measurement equal to 100 square feet (a 10×10 area). Roof areas are typically quoted in squares — a Cape Cod ranch is usually 18–25 squares, a large Cape or colonial is 28–45 squares.
- Shingle wind warranty
- The maximum wind speed a manufacturer warranties a shingle to withstand. CertainTeed Landmark, Landmark PRO, and NorthGate ClimateFlex all carry 160 mph wind warranties when installed with Swift Start® starter and Shadow Ridge® hip-and-ridge — and unlimited wind when installed as the full Integrity Roof System®.
- Soffit vent
- An intake vent installed in the soffit (the underside of the roof overhang) that pulls cool outside air into the attic. Soffit vents work in tandem with ridge vents to create a continuous airflow that keeps the attic cool, dry, and ice-dam-resistant.
- SPF roof
- Sprayed Polyurethane Foam — a flat-roofing system applied as a liquid foam that expands and cures into a seamless, monolithic membrane with built-in insulation. Best for irregular roofs and cold-storage buildings.
- StreakFighter®
- CertainTeed's algae-resistance technology — copper-coated granules that prevent black streaking on asphalt shingles. Landmark carries a 10-year StreakFighter warranty; Landmark PRO and NorthGate ClimateFlex carry 30-year.
- Sure Start™ Plus
- CertainTeed's extended warranty that picks up where the standard shingle warranty leaves off — providing up to 30 years of transferable coverage. Only available from CertainTeed Premier Credentialed installers like HyTech.
- Synthetic underlayment
- A woven polymer underlayment (such as CertainTeed DiamondDeck® or Roofers' Select®) installed between the roof deck and the shingles. Provides a secondary water barrier and is required for the full Integrity Roof System warranty.
- Tear-off
- Complete removal of the existing roof down to the deck before installing a new roof. The opposite of a re-cover (installing new shingles over the existing layer). We always recommend a full tear-off — it's the only way to inspect and repair the decking and install ice and water shield properly.
- TPO
- Thermoplastic Polyolefin — a heat-welded white reflective membrane used for commercial flat roofs. Highly energy efficient, with seams that are heat-welded rather than glued (eliminating the most common failure point). Typical lifespan 25-30 years.
- VELUX No Leak Skylight
- VELUX's flagship line of skylights backed by the No Leak guarantee — a 10-year installation warranty against leaks. VELUX makes manual, electric, and solar-powered Fresh Air models. HyTech is a 5-Star Certified VELUX installer.
- Ventilated drip edge (HICKS)
- A vented drip edge that doubles as a soffit intake vent — installed at the eaves where there's no traditional soffit (e.g., on homes with closed eaves). The HICKS Ventilated Drip Edge is custom-bent to the specific roof pitch.
